Hiking Travel Tips

  • Emergencies 021-480 7700
  • Cable Car Info 021-424 8181 - phone for weather report.
  • San Parks Info 021-701 8692
  • The Cable Car runs every 15 min, max 65 passengers, open 0800 am, close 1900 pm, return adult cost R130.00 pp, one-way cost R65.00.
  • As the weather on the peninsula can change three times in a day always ensure you have warm/wet weather gear, a sun hat, water, sun block and an energy snack.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and socks to prevent your feet from blistering. Many hikers wear two layers of socks, a thin polyester sock liner with a thicker outer sock.
  • Carry a hat with you for added protection from the sun. Up to 80% of your body heat can be lost through your neck and head.
  • Be careful when hiking up and down hills. Hiking up and down hills and mountains requires care, especially on slopes covered with loose gravel or loose dirt. Keep your knees bent and use side-stepping maneuvers when hiking on steep parts.
  • Use a hiking stick or hiking poles. A hiking stick or even a pair of hiking poles will give you an extra stability.
  • Take your time.
  • When you ascend to higher elevations the air is thinner and has less oxygen.
  • Be careful when crossing streams. Rocks and debris in the streams can be very slippery and hazardous.
  • If you plan to drink water from a stream, use a water filter or water purification tablets. Water is not safe in most areas. The water may be contaminated with parasites or bacteria.
  • As the weather on the peninsula can change three times in a day dress in layers. The weather can change dramatically. Dressing in layers will help ensure you maintain the proper body temperature.
  • Stick to the paths and pay attention to all signage.
  • If you get lost, seek shelter close by and stay where you are. If you have followed the tip above someone will find you.
  • Please don't litter.
  • Please don't feed animals or pick flowers.
  • Do not leave your trash behind.
