"We will fulfill your expectations"
With enough heart-pumping activities, from abseiling to paragliding, as well as more relaxed outings to beaches, vineyards and museums, Cape Town easily fills an extended visit. But many, if not most, visitors venture much further east, out along the Garden Route, whose enticements include some of the best land-based whale-watching in the world, crashing seascapes, dappled forests and, at its culmination, lions and elephants in the best game reserve in the southern half of the country. The Rough Guide to Cape Town and the Garden Route is the definitive guide to Cape Town, its stunning environs (including Table Mountain, Cape Point, the Winelands and the Whale Coast) and the Garden Route all the way to Port Elizabeth and the Addo Elephant National Park.

Tulbagh Travel Information
|
In this section we hope to cover all the information a visitor or tourist might require in order to plan a first rate trip to Tulbagh. We will be adding to it over the coming months, so stay with us.
The valley was first settled in 1699, but the village only really began to take shape in 1743 after the construction of the church, now a museum. It was to here, on the outer rim of the settled European areas, that early trekboer families would bring their children out of the wilderness to be
baptized. The Oude Kerk Volksmuseum is the oldest church building in South Africa still existing in its original cross shaped design. This church (and three annexes) now house interesting furniture, porcelain and glass collections.
Tulbagh is one of the most complete examples of an 18th and 19th century village in South Africa. Seriously damaged by an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale in 1969, buildings have been restored with painstaking care. Amongst much else, there exists an entire street, named Church Street, of Cape Dutch architecture in which every building has been declared a national monument. The village celebrates this restoration in grand style on the last Saturday of October each year when the street comes alive for the Tulbagh Festival. This festival is enhanced by falling during what is probably the most beautiful season of the year.
The Tulbagh valley is a beautiful horseshoe shaped idyll, surrounded by mountains up to 2200 meter high. To the north and west is the Groot Winterhoek wilderness area and to the east, the Witzenberg mountain range.
Tulbagh falls within the winter rainfall area but has less rain than Cape Town, approximately 600 mm per year. During winter there are regular snow falls on the mountains, while the summer is hot and dry. The combination of mountains and cultivated land makes for awe inspiring scenery with green vineyards and fruit orchards in the north to mainly wheat in the southern section.
