African Elephant [LOXODONTA AFRICANA]:
|
The largest of all land mammals, the Elephant is unmistakable, with its long trunk, and ivory tusks. The trunk of an elephant is the most fascinating organ, it is extremely dexterous, able to pick up very fine objects, with it the elephant is also able to drink and to cool itself off, by sucking water up into its trunk and spaying it out, either into its mouth or over its back in a shower. It is also used to feed with, plucking leaves and branches off trees, grass, branches and fruit.
Elephants are hunted for their ivory tusks. The Knysna herd is virtually hunted to extinction. The Addo Elephant and Kruger National Park protect large herds. Due to rigorous conservation measures the elephant population in South Africa has grown from a estimated 120 in 1920 in 4 locations, to 10 000 at 40 locations to date.
The Elephant’s trunk is very sensitive and can even detect water under ground. There are as many as 50 000 muscles in an elephant’s
trunk. The sensitive finger-like appendages at the tip of the trunk enables them to pick the smallest twig or flower. Although their skin is up to 3 cm thick, it is quite sensitive. An elephants hearing and smell are excellent but eyesight is moderate and best in dim light.
Their tusks are actually their upper incisors, and grow continuously until they die at around 60 years old. The tusks of the Elephant are used as general tools, for tasks such as digging and stripping trees of bark, but they can make formidable weapons as well. Elephants range widely for food.
Elephants are voracious feeders which in a day consume up to 272 kg of grass, tender shoots and bark from trees. An adult Elephant can drink up to 200 liters of water in a single session. A single elephant deposits upwards of 150 kg of dung every day.
Elephants feet are cushioned, acting as shock absorbers thus allowing the animal to move very quietly for an animal of its size.
The Elephant size is 3.3 meters in height.
The Elephant weight up to to 7000 kg.
The massive tusks of older bulls can weigh up to 50 or 60 kilograms, but tusks weighing up to 90 kilograms have been recorded. Tusks record mass is 102,7 kg. Tusks record length 3,48 meters.
The Elephant lifespan is 70 years.
The Elephant voice has a loud trumpeting and belly rumbling.
